The LUXMAT Story: OEM Heritage, Built for Everyday Drivers

Most car mats are made to a price. LUXMAT was made to a standard, one set on an OEM factory floor more than 25 years ago and carried through to every set we make today. In this short film, our founder Terry Lawlor explains where that standard came from, and why we built LUXMAT to bring it to everyday drivers.
It started with an OEM contract
Terry’s story begins more than 25 years ago, when he founded our parent company, Visscher-Caravelle Australia (VCA), an Australian business built on a simple idea: supply better quality products to the automotive industry. Its first major contract was with Toyota, making the carpet mats fitted to the well-known Toyota Camry. From there, VCA grew into one of Australia’s leading suppliers of carpet mats to the major car companies.
That is the heritage behind LUXMAT: decades of making mats to the exact standards carmakers demand, fitted to the vehicle from the factory.
From the factory floor to the aftermarket
For years, that OEM-grade quality was something you only got with a new car. Terry saw an opportunity. Drivers buying mats after the fact were left choosing between loose universal rubber and mats that never quite fit. LUXMAT was built to change that, taking everything VCA had learned supplying carmakers and applying it to an aftermarket product, with a focus on exact fit, better materials and careful workmanship.
The result is custom-fit coil rubber: patterned from a 3D scan of your exact make, model and year, with a dense looped surface that lets dirt, sand and water fall below where you stand. You can read more about what coil rubber car mats are and how coil rubber compares to flat rubber and carpet.
Made in Australia, start to finish
Every LUXMAT is made in our factory in Campbellfield, Melbourne. The design, the 3D scanning, the cutting and the finishing all happen here, which means the quality is controlled at every step rather than shipped in. It also means that if something is not right, there is a local team behind it. More on that on our Australian-made car mats page.
What it means for your car
The payoff of that heritage is simple. A LUXMAT set is cut to your exact footwell, so it sits flush and engages the factory anchor points instead of sliding. It protects the carpet underneath from water, sand and wear. And when it needs a clean, you lift it out and hose it off. It is the OEM experience, brought directly to you, without a new car attached.
As Terry puts it in the film, the plan from here is to keep doing what the business has always done: making things better.
Frequently asked questions
Who makes LUXMAT car mats?
LUXMAT is made by Ultimate Auto Co., founded by Terry Lawlor. The business grew out of more than 25 years supplying OEM carpet mats to major car companies through VCA, and brings that same manufacturing standard to an aftermarket product for everyday drivers.
Are LUXMAT car mats made in Australia?
Yes. Every LUXMAT set is designed and manufactured at our factory in Campbellfield, Melbourne. The 3D scanning, cutting and finishing all happen here, so the quality is controlled from start to finish.
What does OEM mean, and why does it matter for car mats?
OEM mats are the ones carmakers fit to a new vehicle, made to strict standards and patterned to that exact model. LUXMAT applies the same approach to the aftermarket: each set is patterned from a 3D scan of your specific make, model and year, rather than trimmed from a universal shape.
What are LUXMAT mats made from?
Custom-fit coil rubber: a dense surface of upright rubber loops over a sealed backing, so dirt, sand and water fall below where you stand. When it needs a clean, you lift the mat out and hose it off. Here is more on what coil rubber car mats are.
How do I get LUXMAT mats for my car?

Over 25 years ago, I established VCA with a simple vision: to supply better quality products to the automotive industry. That led to our first OEM contract with Toyota, supplying carpet mats for the locally produced Camry. From those humble beginnings, VCA has grown to become Australia’s leading supplier of carpet mats to every major car company in the country.
But sitting on the sidelines of the aftermarket industry, I always felt there was an opportunity to bring that same level of quality to everyday drivers. And that’s how LUXMAT evolved. We took everything we’d learned from the OEM industry and applied it to an aftermarket product, with a focus on exact fit, better materials and superior workmanship.
Every LUXMAT is made in our Melbourne factory, which means we control the quality from start to finish. And that’s really what Ultimate Auto Co. is about: bringing the OEM experience directly to the customer.
We’re not finished yet. We’ve got plans to release more top quality products, all with the same focus on superior materials and perfect fitment. I’m Terry, founder of VCA and Ultimate Auto Co. And for me, it’s about doing what we’ve always done: making things better.
